The stock configuration is a 1 x 8 with a quite large cassette, but it already has the downtube cable stop for a front derailleur so it would be economical to add a front derailleur, shift and another chain ring for climb-any-mountain gearing. This is a true commuter grade bike with steel frame and formidable wheels. A great bike to grow with you - bike packing, touring, etc.


Surly's 'run big' meaning if you normally think you are a 54, you may be more comfortable on a 52. The size chart confirms this.
